Release Notes:

After the chuckle-free miseryfest that was the re-release of
‘Show Me The Way To Amarillo’, featuring rotund funnyman Peter
Kaye gurning manically as he jumped the shark, there appeared
to be no way back for Tony Christie after this novelty
albatross was mercilessly flogged to death throughout 2005.
Even during his 70s heyday Christie was about as fashionable
as a knitted condom, although his recent work with Jarvis
Cocker and Richard Hawley has served to slightly buoy his
profile and sustain his relevance in the ever-changing musical
landscape. The credibility of these collaborations has
culminated in new album ‘Made In Sheffield’, partly produced
by Richard Hawley, as the ageing crooner attempts to forge a
cogent album of songs to stand as an opus to the rich cultural
heritage of his hometown.

Where a covers album is usually the aural equivalent of an
artist clawing at a scorched pile of earth where the bottom of
the barrel used to be, Christie and his management have
cherrypicked a fine roster of music from some of Sheffield’s
most famous musical exports, which comes to together to form a
touching tribute to the Steel City. Artists such as Joe
Cocker, Jarvis Cocker, ABC, The Human League and Arctic
Monkeys are all given the full Christie-treatment, the latter
pair’s ‘Louise’ and ‘The Only Ones Who Know’ being particular
highlights. The hipsters may smirk and go back to joylessly
stuffing their iPod with Crystal Castles b-sides that sound
like several Daleks falling down an escalator, but lose the
will to be cynical and there is plenty to enjoy here. In the
infinitely wise words of Paul Daniels, "You'll like this. Not
a lot, but you'll like it".

Sheffield legend speaks about why he has covered a Monkeys tune

Tony Christie has explained why he chose to cover Arctic Monkeys' 'Only The Ones Who Know' for his forthcoming new album, 'Made In Sheffield'.

The singer, who worked with fellow Sheffield residents Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker on the album, said that the young band reminded him of a musical era past, inspiring him to reinterpret their work.

"The reason I like the Monkeys is because they take me back to the 60's," he told BBC 6music on the night he played a gig last night (October 22) on The Royal Daffodil boat off Liverpool's Albert Dock. "It's very like that 60's scene, The Beatles and all that.

"It reminds me of that and of a time when I was kicking off in the business. So it's a bit retro but great."
